Regulator Head: Only Strong, Independent Journalism Can Hold Power Accountable

Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), stated that only strong and independent journalism can hold those in power accountable for their decisions. Speaking at the opening of the regulator’s first meeting during her second term, Naplatanova urged journalists to uphold professional ethical standards and zealously protect the dignity of their profession. During her tenure, which included serving as acting CEM chair from April to October 2024, she thanked the council members for their trust, noting that each member’s experience is a valuable contribution to the CEM’s work.

She projected that the CEM will remain open to society, journalistic organizations, the media industry, and academia, aiming to encourage initiatives that improve media content quality. Naplatanova clarified that the regulator’s role is primarily supportive, emphasizing that the ultimate responsibility for the media environment rests with journalists and creative professionals. She stressed that mere declarations are insufficient to safeguard freedom of speech and journalistic independence.

According to her, only strong and independent media can facilitate critical thinking and enable society to make informed decisions regarding its future. While the CEM chair pointed out that the members’ roles are temporary, the effort to protect the media environment must be continuous. Naplatanova was elected Chair on April 23, nominated by Simona Veleva and Kadrinka Kadrinova, and her term commenced on April 28, concluding on April 27, 2027.
