A multimedia language classroom for studying Bulgarian will open on May 2 in Tatarbunary, Ukraine, according to Svetoslav Ivanov, Consul General of Bulgaria in Odesa. The initiative falls under the framework of a program supporting Bulgarian communities in several countries, including Ukraine. Ivanov noted that eight project proposals were approved through this program, with support from the Consulate General and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The proposal for the Bulgarian Sunday School Balgarche, operated by the Tatarbunary Bulgarian Cultural and Educational Society Rodolyubie, was one of these approved projects. The primary goal of the project is to preserve and develop Bulgarian culture and linguistic identity. By integrating modern teaching tools, the classroom aims to encourage students of Bulgarian descent to acquire knowledge and maintain connections with their ancestral homeland, Bulgaria.
Ivanov emphasized the importance of the support for the Sunday School, given its operation within a mixed-population area. Established in 2014, the Bulgarian Sunday School Balgarche has expanded its reach. During the 2016–2017 academic year, it opened three additional branches in Tatarbunary, Kiliia, and Novoselivka.
Beyond language instruction, the school offers extracurricular workshops in folk dance, traditional instruments, singing, theatrical arts, and applied folk arts. Currently, 341 students participate in these activities, supported by 45 teachers. The Bulgarian Sunday School Balgarche is a recognized member of the World Association of Bulgarian Schools Abroad.
