During a conference held in Panagyurishte, marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev addressed the audience, urging attendees to view history as an ongoing process rather than relying solely on commemorative slogans. The prof noted that Bulgaria is currently navigating a complex period, drawing parallels to the circumstances faced by Bulgarians in 1876.
Valchev stated that the uprising represented a culmination of numerous efforts by Bulgarians to achieve political liberation, tracing this struggle back through the nineteenth century. He emphasized that after repeated unsuccessful attempts, a realization emerged: that maintaining dignity required taking personal responsibility. The rector outlined three primary lessons derived from the past.
First, he highlighted the importance of self-determination, noting that today’s global conflicts necessitate a sense of community, especially among youth. Second, he stressed that commemorations must initiate a continuous commitment to preserving memory, advocating for the telling of historical accounts and the revival of family histories from that era. Finally, he called for belief in the younger generation, pointing out that it was the youth who assumed the significant responsibility during the uprising.
Valchev concluded that societal organization and collective action remain the duty of the citizenry.
