On April Uprising Revive Memory of Freedom Martyrs, Says BTA Director General

Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), Kiril Valchev, stated that discussions surrounding the April Uprising serve to commemorate the martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom. These remarks were made at the opening of a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions hosted by the BTA across several revolutionary districts, including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Ruse.

Valchev noted that the discussions emphasized key lessons from the uprising relevant today, particularly the necessity of establishing overarching goals before undertaking difficult steps. He highlighted that the historical narrative often frames the uprising’s conclusion as a success, drawing a parallel between failure and ultimate salvation, an analogy he linked to the power of media to shift public opinion. Drawing from excerpts of Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, Valchev outlined crucial leadership principles.

These include maintaining an active stance, resisting personal self-interest, and shielding followers from despair. He also stressed the need for varied levels of leadership based on expertise. The commemorative efforts have been extensive, involving tributes at memorial sites, such as in Giurgiu and Ruse, and the presentation of specialized publications by the BTA.
