On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue surrounding the significant historical milestone. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Rector of the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Museum Director Assoc.

Prof. Atanas Shopov. BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions about the April Uprising help maintain the memory of martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom.

He noted that the conferences spanned the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized that the primary takeaway from the discussions is the need to establish clear, overarching goals before tackling necessary, difficult steps. BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s crucial role in public opinion formation, stating that media organizations must proactively connect with their audiences.

He advised that national pride should be cultivated responsibly, cautioning against the manipulation of history, and urged media and scholars to build national self-esteem based on genuine achievements. Sofia University Rector Prof. Valchev suggested viewing history as a living narrative, arguing that the current period requires moving beyond superficial patriotism.

He identified three key lessons from 1876: the desire for self-determination, the belief in the nation’s future, and the importance of involving the younger generation. Mayor Gagov urged Bulgarians to honor the legacy of ordinary people who became heroes. He argued the anniversary should promote unity and help people view history as a source of pride, countering what he termed a “deficit of pride.” Boyko Vassilev highlighted the lasting impact of journalists during the uprising, concluding that the April Uprising represents an enduring political dimension of Bulgaria.
