Museum Director: April Uprising Shows Bulgarians Succeed When They Act Independently

Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov, Director of the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte, addressed a conference on “150 Years since the April Uprising – 1876,” emphasizing that Bulgarian historical achievements often stemmed from independent action and strategic surprise.

He noted that history serves not only as a record of the past but also as a guide for future collective progress, cautioning against repeating past errors. Shopov focused heavily on the events of Panagyurishte, recalling the significance of April 30, 150 years prior. He explained that at that time, the local community risked substantial personal sacrifice for the goal of future freedom, even while facing overwhelming odds.

He pointed out that the mid-19th century already featured a robust civic structure, comprising numerous guild associations and commercial establishments mobilized for the common cause. According to the director, the objective of the early uprising was less about immediate military victory over the Ottoman Empire and more about cultivating a collective belief in the populace’s inherent strength. The speaker argued that the April events provide multiple examples of patriotism and early statehood, citing the assembly in Oborishte as an illustration of tolerance—values he believes are relevant to the modern European context.

He affirmed Panagyurishte’s central role in the development of Bulgarian state traditions. The forum, supported by the Panagyurishte Municipality and the local museum, is part of a broader series of BTA discussions commemorating the anniversary. This initiative is part of the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe,” aiming to mark major historical milestones up to 2032.
