The dance groups “Shevitsa” from Essen, Germany, and “Mila Rodina” from Krefeld, Germany, will collaborate for their debut joint performance at the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival. The event is scheduled to take place from May 15 to 17 at the BMW Park in Munich. The two ensembles are uniting to showcase their shared dedication to Bulgarian folklore and the goal of preserving and promoting Bulgarian culture internationally, according to their leader, Ivandzhelin Ivanova.
Their performance will feature the dance “Shopska Zakachka” (“Shopi tease”), choreographed by Iliya Petkov. This piece draws inspiration from traditional dances originating in the Shopluk folklore region, aiming to recreate the energetic atmosphere and playful exchanges characteristic of village festivities. The combined group comprises 22 dancers, with ages ranging from 14 to over 60.
Several members of the group were born or raised in Germany but maintain significant ties to their Bulgarian heritage. Preparation for this performance has involved rigorous rehearsals multiple times per week, alongside the creation of specialized costumes and accessories. The travelling festival serves as a gathering point for amateur Bulgarian folklore groups from around the globe.
Since its inception in 2015, the event has been hosted in various European cities. This joint appearance marks a significant collaboration between the established groups from Essen and Krefeld, continuing the tradition of Bulgarian dance arts.
