Of April Uprising 150th Anniversary Held in Panagyurishte

The commemorations marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising in Panagyurishte commenced on Friday with a religious procession, a flag-raising ceremony, and a memorial service at the Holy Presentation of the Virgin Mary church. Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov noted that the day’s events included a living tableau recreating the march of statehood that occurred 150 years prior on the town’s streets. Later, the celebrations featured the historical reenactment, “Courage and Sacrifice – Panagyurishte 1876,” held at the Apriltsi Memorial Complex.

This event depicted key moments, including the declaration of the uprising in the capital of the Fourth Revolutionary District and the subsequent defense and suppression of the revolt. Following this, the town’s History Museum opened an audio-visual installation titled “Panagyurishte 1876 – a Sanctuary of the National Spirit!”

President Iliana Iotova, who cut the ribbon at the museum opening, addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the legacy of the April Uprising is the commitment to the homeland and the necessity of national unity. During the concluding ceremonial tattoo at 20 April Square, Iotova reiterated that Panagyurishte represents the spirit of the Bulgarian revolution.
