A fashion show held on May 2, 1974, in Ruse, featured 300 new models from several prominent Bulgarian manufacturing enterprises. According to preserved archival photos from BTA, the event showcased collections from fashion houses including Boriana in Cherven Bryag, Arda in Ruse, Sanya in Pleven, Burya in Gabrovo, Druzhba in Varna, Mizia in Pleven, and Bulgaria in Plovdiv. One photograph from the event captures young pop singer Tanya Emilova performing for the audience.
The participating companies represent key aspects of Bulgaria’s textile industry. Boriana, established in 1968, is noted as a fashion house from Cherven Bryag. Arda, an iconic clothing manufacturer located in Ruse, was founded in 1932; the company opened a new factory building in the center of Ruse in 1968.
Meanwhile, Sanya’s textile factory in Pleven had received approval in 1972 for a conceptual expansion project from the Council of Ministers of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria. Mizia was founded earlier, in 1960. Historically, during the period of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1989), the fashion and textile manufacturing sectors were state-owned and centrally planned.
The industry’s primary focus was the mass production of goods intended for the domestic market and for export to other Eastern Bloc (Comecon) countries, particularly the Soviet Union. The 1974 show in Ruse provides a snapshot of this centralized industrial effort within the Bulgarian fashion landscape.
