Bulgarian Passport Issue Launched

The issuance of new Bulgarian passports and identity documents commenced with the opening of the new Administrative Services Centre of the Bulgarian Identity Documents Directorate in Sofia’s Mladost 4 borough. Caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev stated that the project, which began in 2022, has reached a final stage with this facility. He noted that the new centre implements centralized personalization, establishing a more secure model that meets the highest security standards, while the submission of applications will remain decentralized.

Dechev added that this upgrade not only enhances national security but also solidifies Bulgaria’s standing as a significant international partner. Deputy Interior Minister Ivan Anchev highlighted that the centre incorporates advanced technological capabilities and will soon offer electronic identification services. Regarding travel documents, Bulgaria will now issue new 48-page passports valid for ten years, although the existing five-year passport option will remain available.

Anchev also addressed the associated cost adjustments, clarifying that the increases are aligned with current production costs. During the official ceremony, Dr. Stefan Muehlbauer, from the manufacturing company, emphasized the extensive nature of the development, noting that the goal was to integrate the most advanced technologies available for Bulgarian identity documents.

The modernization effort represents a culmination of development that began over a decade ago. These structural and technological advancements mark a significant step in modernizing the nation’s identity infrastructure.
