Bulgarians Say Transition to Euro Is Smooth, Eurobarometer Finds

A recent Eurobarometer survey indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) perceive the transition from the Bulgarian lev to the euro as proceeding smoothly. Regarding the adoption of the common currency, 49% of respondents view the introduction of the euro favorably, while 43% hold a negative view. Furthermore, 67% of Bulgarians believe the euro is beneficial for the broader European Union.

However, public expectations regarding the economic impact are divided. A majority (66%) anticipate that the euro will increase inflation in Bulgaria, contrasting with 21% who believe the currency will help maintain price stability. Overall, 47% expect a positive effect from the euro for Bulgaria, while 44% expressed concerns.

On a personal level, 46% anticipate a positive impact, compared to 42% expecting negative consequences. Separately, the European Commission issued a report recommending that Bulgarian authorities maintain intensive price monitoring. This monitoring should ensure accurate price display, limit unwarranted increases, and rigorously enforce consumer protection and competition laws.

The report advises that future enlargements into the euro area require sustained and intensive price oversight. Additionally, the Commission suggests considering voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to a full year. The findings emphasize that robust communication and public awareness campaigns are crucial elements for ensuring a smooth transition to the euro.
