Bulgarians Say Transition to Euro Is Smooth, Eurobarometer Finds

A recent Eurobarometer survey presented by the European Commission indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) perceive the transition from the lev to the euro as proceeding smoothly. Regarding the introduction of the European currency, 49% of respondents view it positively, while 43% hold the opposite opinion. Furthermore, 67% of Bulgarians believe the euro benefits the broader European Union.

Economic outlooks reveal mixed expectations: 66% anticipate that the euro will cause inflation in Bulgaria, contrasted by 21% who believe the common currency will help maintain price stability. Overall, 47% expect a positive effect from the euro on Bulgaria, while 44% express concerns. On a personal level, 46% anticipate a positive impact, compared to 42% who foresee negative consequences.

Separately, the European Commission issued a report recommending that Bulgarian authorities maintain intensive price monitoring to ensure accurate price display, restrict unwarranted increases, and enforce consumer protection and competition laws. The report advises that such monitoring during future euro area enlargements must be both sustained and intensive. Additional suggestions include considering voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to a full year.

The Commission also noted that effective communication and public awareness campaigns are vital for a smooth transition, suggesting that countries preparing for entry could provide businesses with coin rolls rather than “starter kits.”
