Bulgarians Say Transition to Euro Is Smooth, Eurobarometer Finds

A recent Eurobarometer survey presented by the European Commission indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) perceive the transition from the lev to the euro as proceeding smoothly. Regarding the adoption of the European currency, 49% of respondents view the introduction of the euro favorably, while 43% hold a contrasting view. On a broader level, 67% of Bulgarians believe the euro benefits the European Union.

Economic sentiment reveals mixed expectations; a majority (66%) anticipate that the euro will lead to increased inflation in Bulgaria, contrasting with 21% who expect the common currency to maintain price stability. Furthermore, 47% predict an overall positive effect from the euro for Bulgaria, while 44% express concerns. On a personal scale, 46% believe the currency change will positively impact them, compared to 42% who anticipate negative consequences.

Separately, the European Commission issued a report recommending that Bulgarian authorities maintain intensive price monitoring. This monitoring must ensure accurate price display, restrict unwarranted price hikes, and enforce consumer protection and competition laws. The report advises that such price monitoring during future euro area enlargements should remain both intensive and sustained over a significant duration.

Additionally, the Commission suggests that considering voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to one year could be beneficial. The findings emphasize that robust communication and public awareness campaigns are critical components for ensuring a smooth transition to the euro for Bulgarians.
