Bulgarians Say Transition to Euro Is Smooth, Eurobarometer Finds

A recent Eurobarometer survey presented by the European Commission indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) perceive the ongoing transition from the lev to the euro as proceeding smoothly. Regarding the introduction of the European currency, 49% of respondents view it positively for Bulgaria, while 43% hold the opposing view. Furthermore, 67% of Bulgarians believe the euro benefits the European Union as a whole.

Economic sentiment shows mixed feelings about the currency’s impact. A majority (66%) of Bulgarians anticipate that the euro will increase inflation within the country, contrasting with 21% who believe the common European currency will help maintain price stability. On a general level, 47% expect an overall positive effect from the euro for Bulgaria, while 44% express concerns.

Personally, 46% anticipate a positive impact on their own finances, compared to 42% who foresee negative consequences. In a separate report, the European Commission advised that Bulgarian authorities should continue intensive price monitoring during the transition. The recommendations emphasize ensuring correct price display, limiting unjustified price increases, and strengthening consumer protection and competition legislation.

The Commission also suggested that future euro area enlargements require sustained and intensive price monitoring. Additionally, the report advises considering voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to one year. The Commission concluded that public awareness campaigns and clear communication are crucial elements for a successful transition to the euro.
