Bulgarians Say Transition to Euro Is Smooth, Eurobarometer Finds

A recent Eurobarometer survey indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) perceive the transition to the euro as proceeding smoothly. Regarding the introduction of the European currency, 49% of respondents view it positively, while 43% hold a contrary opinion. Furthermore, a substantial 67% of Bulgarians believe the euro benefits the European Union as a whole.

Economically, the sentiment remains mixed. A majority (66%) anticipate that the euro will increase inflation in Bulgaria, though 21% believe the common currency will help maintain price stability. Overall, 47% expect a positive effect from the euro for Bulgaria, compared to 44% who expressed concerns.

On a personal level, 46% anticipate a positive impact, while 42% foresee negative consequences. In a separate report concerning Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area, the European Commission advises that Bulgarian authorities maintain intensive price monitoring. This monitoring must ensure accurate price display, limit unjustified price increases, and enforce consumer protection and competition laws.

The report stresses that future monitoring during enlargements must remain both intensive and sustained. Additionally, it suggests implementing voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to one year. The Commission also noted that communication and public awareness campaigns are crucial elements for ensuring a smooth transition to the euro.
