Bulgarians Say Transition to Euro Is Smooth, Eurobarometer Finds

A recent Eurobarometer survey indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) perceive the transition from the lev to the euro as proceeding smoothly. Regarding the adoption of the European currency, 49% of respondents view it favorably, while 43% hold opposing views. On a broader scale, 67% of Bulgarians believe the euro is beneficial for the European Union.

However, public expectations regarding economic impact show a notable split. A majority (66%) anticipate that the euro will increase inflation in Bulgaria, contrasting with 21% who believe the common currency will help maintain price stability. Overall, 47% expect a positive effect from the euro for Bulgaria, compared to 44% who express concerns.

On a personal level, 46% of Bulgarians anticipate a positive impact, while 42% foresee negative consequences. In a separate report concerning Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area, the European Commission advises that Bulgarian authorities maintain intensive price monitoring. This monitoring should ensure accurate price display, curb unjustified price increases, and enforce consumer protection and competition laws.

The report further recommends that future euro area enlargements adopt sustained and intensive price monitoring. Additionally, the Commission suggests considering voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to one year. The report notes that providing businesses with various coin denominations, rather than just “starter kits,” could be beneficial.

Ultimately, the Commission concludes that public awareness campaigns are crucial for ensuring a smooth transition for Bulgarians adopting the euro.
