Commemoration Is Held in Historic Oborishte Area to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A nationwide commemoration marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising was held in the historic area of Oborishte. The event commenced with the opening of the fully renovated Alley of Freedom, which connects the outskirts of Panagyurishte to the monument in Oborishte, where attendees paid their respects. During his address at the monument, Ivan Lalov, Chairman of the Municipal Council of Panagyurishte, reflected on the historical significance of the uprising.

Lalov stated that the efforts toward freedom, though marked by hardship, culminated in the April Rebellion, which he termed the “Bulgarian spring.” He emphasized that Oborishte was pivotal to the movement, noting that on April 14, 1876, delegates gathered there, unified by the belief in a free Bulgaria. Lalov cited historical scholars, referencing Prof. Marko Semov, who noted that the Bulgarian National Revival reached its peak in Oborishte and Panagyurishte.

He concluded by asserting that these two locations continue to represent the national destiny of Bulgaria. The commemoration was attended by numerous dignitaries, including members of parliament, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, various municipal council members, and representatives from academic, governmental, and media institutions. Wreaths and floral tributes were laid throughout the site as part of the proceedings.

The gathering served to honor the memory of the uprising and acknowledge the historical importance of Oborishte to Bulgarian national identity.
