Rector Prof. Valchev: It Is Time to Look at History as Living Page

During a conference hosted by BTA titled “150 Years since the April Uprising of 1876” in Panagyurishte, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev addressed the audience, urging a perspective that views history as a continuous process rather than merely a series of commemorative events. The Prof stated that Bulgaria is currently navigating a complex period, drawing parallels to the challenges faced by the nation in 1876.

Prof. Valchev highlighted that the 19th century was marked by numerous efforts by Bulgarians to secure their political liberation, including attempts to leverage international conflicts. He argued that the cumulative experience led to the realization that self-determination required taking responsibility for one’s own destiny, a lesson evident in the events of 1876.

He outlined three major lessons from this history. First, the need for self-reliance. Second, the importance of belief in the nation’s future, suggesting that such commemorations should initiate a sustained commitment to preserving memory by sharing historical narratives and family histories.

Third, the necessity of trusting the younger generation, who, in the past, shouldered the immense responsibility of state organization. The rector concluded by emphasizing that while accepting self-sacrifice as an idea is one thing, actively assuming responsibility for the welfare of the community is another. Prof.

Valchev stressed that the present requires the collective memory of these past efforts to guide the nation through its current, complex time.
