Rector Prof. Valchev: It Is Time to Look at History as Living Page

During a conference hosted by BTA titled “150 Years since the April Uprising of 1876” in Panagyurishte, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev argued that history should be viewed as an ongoing process rather than merely commemorated through traditional patriotic displays. He suggested that Bulgaria is currently navigating a complex period, drawing parallels to the national experiences of 1876.

The prof noted that the 19th century was marked by numerous attempts by Bulgarians to secure political liberation, including efforts to utilize international conflicts in the Balkans and Europe. After many unsuccessful endeavors, Bulgarians ultimately realized that maintaining dignity required assuming personal responsibility for their destiny, a realization exemplified by the events of 1876. Valchev stated that the modern era presents significant global conflicts and a perceived lack of community among young people, necessitating historical education.

He stressed that the first major lesson from 1876 is the necessity of self-determination. Furthermore, the rector highlighted that the uprising was fueled by deep belief in the nation’s future. He called for commemorations to initiate a continuous commitment to preserving memory by recounting historical events and reviving family narratives.

The third critical lesson, according to the prof, involves trusting the younger generation, who historically bore significant responsibilities. Valchev concluded by asserting that establishing a functional state is a collective duty that requires organized effort. He emphasized that the collective spirit demonstrated during those times must guide current efforts to maintain the nation.
