The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, has opened at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje.
The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features an extensive collection of over 130 primary source documents. These materials—including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates—provide detailed documentation regarding the preparation, progression, suppression, and subsequent consequences of the historical uprising.
The curated documents offer multifaceted perspectives, illuminating the international reaction to the events, alongside insights derived from Ottoman documents that reflect the viewpoints of both local and central Ottoman authorities. Among the documented authors are prominent historical figures such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The display showcases both widely recognized and previously lesser-known materials, tracing the events across various revolutionary districts and highlighting the crucial role played by the Bulgarian emigre community and the global response to the unrest.
The exhibition was previously inaugurated in Sofia on April 20, held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and with financial backing from the Ministry of Culture. This comprehensive presentation serves as a significant cultural resource, preserving and interpreting the complex narrative surrounding the national struggle.
