During her address at the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly, Democratic Bulgaria MP Nadejda Iordanova stated that while her parliamentary group respects the will of the Bulgarian people and accepts its role in the opposition, they intend to remain actively engaged. Iordanova noted that the opening of the Assembly occurs during a period where Bulgarian society seeks resolution from prolonged political instability. She asserted that the public requires tangible proof that politics serves citizens rather than itself.
Addressing the newly formed majority, Iordanova acknowledged that the mandate given to Progressive Bulgaria carries a primary responsibility: dismantling the previous political framework. She emphasized that the opposition will consistently defend the rule of law, opposing any state model characterized by impunity or institutions serving powerful interests over the citizenry. Iordanova outlined the opposition’s clear stance: support for any measure that strengthens the rule of law, modernizes the state, and preserves Bulgaria’s European trajectory.
She stated that the top priority must be justice and fighting corruption, not merely a slogan. To achieve this, Iordanova detailed specific legislative demands, including amendments to the Judiciary Act and reforming the Supreme Judicial Council to ensure professional, independent appointments. Furthermore, she called for an audit of the assets of top judicial figures, greater transparency in public procurement and EU fund spending, and a resolution to the ongoing road infrastructure crisis.
According to Iordanova, Bulgaria’s place belongs within a strong European Union, necessitating a state that provides functioning public services, accessible healthcare, and modern education for its people.
