A landslide affected a section of the Smolyan-Pamporovo road on Friday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works. In response, Smolyan Mayor Nikolay Melemov declared a state of emergency and requested standby assistance from all suitably equipped companies. Local mayors and deputy mayors were instructed to monitor road conditions within their respective areas.
For safety reasons, gas and electricity supplies in the vicinity were temporarily cut off. Traffic on Road III-8641 Pamporovo-Smolyan was suspended at the 4 km mark near the Raykovski Livadi locality. A detour was established, directing traffic from Pamporovo-Smolyan via Road III-864 Pamporovo-Stoykite-Road III-866 Stoykite-Smolyan and through the Rozhen Pass.
Experts are assessing the feasibility of temporary road reinforcement and constructing a temporary bypass while a permanent restoration project for the affected section is developed. A regional crisis management team convened in Smolyan on Saturday morning. Regional Governor Zarko Marinov reported that while work was underway to restore gas supply, electricity and water services were confirmed to be operational.
Inspections conducted near the Raykovski Livadi collector indicated signs of ongoing landslide activity. Furthermore, the Pamporovo Dam was inspected and found to be safe. The team decided to urgently inspect the alternative route II-86 Sokolovtsi-Rozhen for fallen trees and to clear ditches.
Initial disruptions on Friday morning included a 10-meter section of the Smolyan-Pamporovo third-class road restricted due to roadway subsidence, which subsequently expanded to about 70 meters, leading to the afternoon landslide.
