Director General: By Organizing Talks about April Uprising, BTA Took Step towards People

Speaking at a conference regarding the April Uprising, Milen Mitev, the Director General of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), stated that BTA’s organization of discussions on the event was a vital step toward public engagement. He argued that in the current media landscape, outlets must proactively connect with their audiences to maximize their utility. The conference marked the conclusion of a series hosted by BTA commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.

Mitev emphasized that a full assessment of the present requires placing current circumstances within a broader historical context, necessitating an understanding of both domestic history and international developments. He highlighted the critical role of the media in shaping public opinion, drawing lessons from the participants of the April Uprising. According to Mitev, the movement exemplified profound hope in their cause and a willingness to make sacrifices, which he described as foundational elements of significant narratives.

Furthermore, Mitev stressed that while the April Uprising remains a pivotal moment in Bulgarian history leading to an independent state, national pride must be cultivated responsibly. He cautioned that national sentiment is frequently manipulated for various agendas. Therefore, he asserted that the responsibility falls upon scholars and the media to build national self-esteem—not through claims of superiority, but through genuine pride in the nation’s history, achievements, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
