Director General: Pencho Slaveykov Exemplifies Ideal Modern Person

At the launch of a national initiative commemorating the 160th anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov in Tryavna on Monday, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev presented a model for modern existence. Valchev stated that Slaveykov exemplified a mindset open to new ideas, emphasizing that the project aims to preserve the poet’s memory through extensive discussion. The initiative will engage all 33 BTA national press clubs, featuring dialogues with scholars, students, writers, journalists, and public figures.

A special issue of BTA’s LIK magazine will document these conversations, continuing a tradition of honoring Bulgarian literary figures, similar to past tributes to Aleko Konstantinov. Valchev noted that Slaveykov, a central figure in Bulgarian modernism and member of the Misul literary circle, promoted modernization through education and global awareness, influenced by his studies in Leipzig. The discussions are intended to explore contemporary definitions of modernity, mirroring past analyses of Konstantinov’s characters as reflections of national traits.

According to the Director General, Slaveykov’s example shows that being modern requires embracing new concepts while pursuing spiritual growth and universal values, without abandoning national identity. Valchev recalled that Slaveykov’s work was shaped by his father, Petko Slaveykov, and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, notably in his unfinished epic, Karvava Pesen. The article also provided biographical context, noting that Slaveykov faced lifelong physical impairments following an illness in 1884.

Despite these challenges, he developed both intimate lyric poetry and socio-critical works. His professional life included roles as a teacher, librarian, and director of cultural institutions. Valchev concluded by noting that such initiatives allow Bulgarians to continuously honor their cultural leaders, extending the commemoration beyond mere anniversary dates.
