AES Bulgaria announced on Friday that it must initiate a controlled and safe shutdown of the Galabovo plant and transition it into a conservation mode. This action is necessitated by the expiration of the long-term power purchase agreement between TPP AES Galabovo and the National Electricity Company (NEK). AES stated that this approach is responsible for protecting the facility and safeguarding potential future operational opportunities, following reports of mass layoffs at the power station.
The company indicated that future employment at the plant will be contingent upon its evolving operations. AES Bulgaria affirmed that it has maintained transparency with its staff regarding the conservation process, treating affected employees with respect. Furthermore, the AES group noted that it has promptly notified Mini Maritsa-East, as its contract for lignite coal supply for electricity generation is set to expire concurrently.
In its statement, AES highlighted ongoing discussions with Bulgarian authorities and relevant stakeholders. These dialogues aim to explore existing development opportunities that could enable the TPP AES Galabovo plant to continue supporting Bulgaria’s energy security and grid reliability. AES also confirmed that these operational changes do not impact the Saint Nikola Wind Farm in Kavarna, which remains part of the investor’s portfolio.
