‘ Expectations of New Parliament

During the inaugural sitting of Bulgaria’s 52nd National Assembly, parliamentarians and party leaders addressed journalists regarding their expectations for the legislative session, the election of the Assembly Chair, and the formation of a new cabinet. Rumen Radev, leader of the Progressive Bulgaria (PB) coalition, stated that the government structure should be finalized by May 15th, citing the volume of pending reforms. He identified the state’s finances as a primary concern, alongside the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council.

Regarding the political landscape, Radev noted the ongoing challenge of dismantling the existing “oligarchic model” within Bulgarian institutions. Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov expressed his expectation that the incoming government would demonstrate principles, referencing recent mass protests that preceded the resignation of the previous administration. He emphasized that the period had shown that governance could proceed with integrity.

Other political groups outlined distinct priorities. Assen Vassilev of the CC bloc stressed the urgent need to elect a Supreme Judicial Council. Tomislav Donchev of GERB-UDF highlighted cabinet formation and the adoption of the 2026 budget as paramount tasks.

Meanwhile, leaders from various factions discussed their approach to opposition, with some committing to constructive monitoring of reforms across Bulgaria. The varied statements highlighted deep divisions regarding the immediate path forward. Despite internal shifts, some groups emphasized a united front for national governance.

The collective expectations remain focused on fiscal reform, judicial overhaul, and establishing a stable governing majority in Bulgaria.
