Honorary Consulate Opens in Serbian City of Novi Sad, Srbijagaz Director Appointed Consul

An honorary consulate of the Russian Federation was opened in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, local media reported on Friday. Dusan Bajatovic, Director of Srbijagaz and a senior official of the Socialist Party of Serbia, has been appointed the consulate’s consul. The opening ceremony was attended by Patriarch Porfiry, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Novi Sad Assembly Speaker Dina Vucinic, and Aleksandar Vulin.

During the event, Bajatovic addressed the relationship between the two nations. He emphasized the historical and religious ties, noting the shared Orthodox faith between Serbs and Russians. However, he also stated that, beyond this shared heritage, Serbs possess limited knowledge regarding Russia’s modern advancements in science, culture, and natural beauty.

Bajatovic referenced the Russian Historical Society, stating its objective is to guard against historical revisionism. He announced that the consulate’s activities will focus on promoting cultural cooperation and student exchanges between Serbia and Russia. He further indicated plans to establish a Russian school in the region.

According to Bajatovic, this educational initiative aims to showcase Russian knowledge, counteracting the perception that all culture originates from Western sources, and thereby strengthening ties between the people of Novi Sad and Russia.
