Iotova: Legislature Should Prioritize Budget Adoption

During the inaugural sitting of the 52nd National Assembly on Thursday, Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova addressed the newly sworn-in members of the legislature, emphasizing the immediate necessity for the body to vote on the 2026 national budget. She characterized the extension of the 2025 budget as a “serious manifestation of impasse.” Iotova stated that any delay in approving financial plans risks stagnation and unpredictability for citizens, businesses, municipalities, and state institutions. The head of state acknowledged that resolving these issues requires concerted effort.

She noted that restoring public trust in Bulgarian institutions will be a complex, multi-faceted task involving all branches of government. Iotova referenced the mandate given to the Progressive Bulgaria political force by the electorate, citing expectations for stable governance, the separation of powers as outlined in the Constitution, and effective justice administration. Furthermore, the President urged Bulgaria to adopt a more assertive role within the European Union.

She argued that after nineteen years of EU membership, Bulgaria’s viewpoint must be recognized as valuable, positioning the country as a contributor to the EU’s security and economic development. Iotova asserted that Bulgaria possesses unique contributions regarding the security of external borders and the development of the Western Balkans. Her address concluded with a call for Bulgaria to assert its full potential to help the EU regain its leading international standing.
