Iotova: Legislature Should Prioritize Budget Adoption

Addressing the newly sworn-in Members of Parliament during the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly, President Iliana Iotova emphasized that passing the 2026 national budget is a critical function for the legislature. She characterized the extension of the 2025 budget as a significant indication of current institutional deadlock. The head of state warned that any delay in budgetary action risks plunging citizens, businesses, municipalities, and state institutions into stagnation and unpredictability.

Iotova stated that restoring public trust in Bulgarian institutions will require concerted, collective efforts across all branches of government. She noted that Bulgarian citizens elected a single political force, Progressive Bulgaria, with expectations for stable governance, adherence to the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution, and tangible action against corruption. The President stressed the public demand for justice and effective administration of law.

In addressing Bulgaria’s international role, Iotova urged the nation to adopt a more assertive stance within the European Union. She argued that Bulgaria’s perspective and contribution are valuable, asserting that its voice must be heard on matters concerning the security of the EU’s external borders and the development of the Western Balkans. According to Iotova, Bulgaria possesses unique contributions that are necessary for Europe to regain its international leadership and maintain high standards for its citizens.
