He referenced a powerful passage from Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, describing a scene where Georgi Benkovski witnesses the burning of Panagyurishte and the deaths of his supporters, yet maintains that his objective has been achieved, illustrating profound tragedy and the burden of leadership. Commenting on BTA’s conference series, Vassilev noted that the discussions are intended as dialogues connecting historical events to contemporary Bulgaria, as the uprising raises enduring questions relevant to public life.
He pointed out that even during the 50th anniversary commemoration, Bulgarian society exhibited deep divisions, serving as a warning applicable today. The speaker concluded that “The April Uprising is an eternal political Bulgaria that we continue to see.” Through his analysis, Vassilev highlighted the critical role played by these journalists in shaping the national narrative surrounding the uprising.
