Journalists Helped Shape Impact of April Uprising, Journalist Boyko Vassilev Says

At a conference held in Panagyurishte marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, journalist Boyko Vassilev noted the significant influence of three journalists on the success of the revolt, which ultimately contributed to the Russo-Turkish War and Bulgaria’s liberation. The event was organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA). Speaking at the conference, Vassilev identified Zahari Stoyanov, credited with documenting both the positive and negative aspects of Bulgaria’s historical trajectory.

He also highlighted Hristo Botev for publicizing the seizure of the ship Radetzky and the subsequent impact of Botev’s death across Europe. Finally, Vassilev acknowledged Januarius MacGahan for exposing the atrocities occurring in Bulgaria to a wider European audience. Vassilev emphasized the comprehensive nature of the documentation, stating that “Words are truthful when they speak of both light and shadow.” He cited a poignant passage from Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, describing a scene where Georgi Benkovski observes the burning of Panagyurishte and the murder of allies, yet remains resolute in his goal.

According to Vassilev, this moment encapsulates profound tragedy and the ethical burden of leadership. Regarding the BTA’s conference series, Vassilev clarified that the discussions are intended as dialogues linking historical events to contemporary Bulgaria, noting that the spirit of the uprising raises enduring questions in modern public life. He observed that even during the 50th anniversary of the uprising, Bulgarian society exhibited deep divisions, a pattern he described as a persistent contemporary warning.

Concluding his remarks, Vassilev suggested that the April Uprising represents an “eternal political Bulgaria that we continue to see,” underscoring the lasting relevance of the work done by these pioneering journalists.
