LIK Issue Dedicated to 150 Years Since April Uprising Launches in Koprivshtitsa

The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. This thematic publication from the Bulgarian News Agency explores the uprising through its archives, featuring information on commemorations held over the years within BTA’s news service and bulletins. The issue also compiles commentary from educators, public figures, and local community representatives from the revolutionary districts associated with the uprising’s history.

The launch event for the magazine is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at the St. Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa, marking the Day of the First Gunshot. This event will be jointly streamed via video link with BTA’s national press clubs both in Bulgaria and internationally.

Koprivshtitsa Municipality and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are collaborating partners, with the Academy also releasing its own publication, “150 Years Since the April Uprising.”

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the LIK issue presents key discussions held at the 150th-anniversary commemorations across the four revolutionary districts: Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte. He emphasized that the discussions highlighted enduring lessons from the uprising, concluding that despite perceived setbacks, the movement ultimately led to Bulgaria’s freedom. Journalist Boyko Vassilev stated that discussions surrounding the April Uprising remain relevant to contemporary Bulgaria.

Prof. Georgi Valchev highlighted the youth of the uprising’s leaders, suggesting they prioritized an unconditional pursuit of freedom over material stability. Furthermore, Prof.

Atanas Semov asserted that the April Uprising constitutes the greatest collective effort of the Bulgarian people. The magazine includes a thematic timeline drawing from BTA’s archives, tracing coverage of the uprising from the 20th century to the present.

  1. It’s important to see these historical events documented and revisited through the archives.
