Market Discrimination Most Common in Hiring and Pay

A survey conducted by the Commission for Protection against Discrimination (CPD) involving 592 respondents found that 53.7% reported experiencing some form of discrimination. The CPD study, which analyzed economic discrimination in the country and took place from November to December 2024, presented its findings in Sofia. Regarding employment, discrimination was reported when hiring by 47.8% of respondents, and when receiving payment by 33.1%.

Other reported instances of discrimination in the labor market included issues with additional benefits (32.6%), working conditions (26.1%), and career development (31.2%). Certain groups were identified as being particularly affected by labor market discrimination, including older workers (53.8%), ethnic minorities (50.4%), and people with disabilities (36.1%). The survey also examined broader areas of economic discrimination.

Thirty-six point five percent of respondents noted discrimination in accessing healthcare, education, and social care. Furthermore, discrimination was reported in the pricing of goods and services (27.2%), public procurement (27.9%), and financial institutions (25.4%). The CPD noted that economic discrimination is most pronounced in Northwestern and Southeastern Bulgaria, while the South-Central region reported the weakest incidence.

Over 60% of respondents believe this discrimination is widespread. The CPD suggested that negative perceptions towards certain groups are the primary cause of economic discrimination, followed by a lack of information. The CPD recommended strengthening non-discrimination regulations, increasing public awareness, and implementing regional measures to improve access to services and jobs.

  1. It is deeply troubling that over half of the respondents reported experiencing some form of discrimination.
