Minister Calls for Coordinated National Effort to Fight Disinformation

The caretaker Minister of Innovation and Growth, Irena Mladenova, stated that effectively combating disinformation necessitates coordinated efforts involving the technology sector, the scientific community, and the state. Speaking at the concluding event of DisInfoHack 2026 at the GATE Institute at Sofia University on Monday, Mladenova characterized these stakeholders as essential components that must connect to enable society to make informed decisions and reduce vulnerability to external influences with ambiguous objectives. The Minister highlighted that initiatives like DisInfoHack are valuable not only for their immediate outcomes but also for the sustained effort invested in them.

She noted that the process generates a foundation for tangible solutions and observable results in the fight against misinformation. According to Mladenova, the structure of DisInfoHack, which involves mentorship and an extended process of idea development, helps build lasting skills. She expressed optimism that participants have improved their capacity to discern credible information within the constant flow of data.

A key objective of the initiative, she emphasized, is building a network and broadening the dissemination of acquired knowledge. Mladenova urged participants to share their learnings with peers and friends to extend the project’s impact. DisInfoHack is part of a larger three-year project in Bulgaria called Countering Disinformation Environment (Ecosystem) in Bulgaria (CoDE).

This program aims to build information resilience through a scientific methodology, analyzing Bulgaria’s information environment to document best practices and tools for counteracting disinformation.
