Ministry’s Acting Secretary General Says He Has Been Pressured

In a video message posted on Facebook, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, Georgi Kandev, addressed allegations of pressure regarding his position. Kandev stated that he had faced demands, referencing a message telling him to “go home.” He asserted that those attempting to exert pressure were employing familiar tactics, which he characterized as relying on fear and habit, stating, “Not this time!”

The secretary general emphasized that his commitment to his role was firm. “I am not here to bow to threats and backroom deals.

I am here to work the way you have seen over the past two months,” he stated. Kandev detailed an incident from the previous day, when he received multiple calls from obscured mobile numbers. During these calls, he was informed that an individual identified as “Kartofa,” along with associates, was providing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.

He alleged that this action was organized by a former official at the Interior Ministry named “Svetlyo.” Kandev speculated that the objective of these actions was to implicate him and compel him to withdraw from his post. The general pattern of these attempts, according to Kandev, involved the use of orchestrated false testimony. He questioned the Sofia City Prosecution Service regarding the veracity of the testimony provided by “convicted and criminally charged individuals” and sought to identify the source of the pressure.

Kandev concluded by stating his resolve, asserting that silence is not a viable option and that he would not concede to the tactics being deployed.
