On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue surrounding the historical event. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.

Georgi Valchev, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov.

BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions on the April Uprising help revive the memory of martyrs for Bulgarian freedom. He noted that the discussions spanned the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—in addition to Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized the consensus reached: prioritizing long-term goals over immediate, difficult steps.

He announced that the 2026 BTA Meeting of Bulgarian Media will focus on “Media and Leaders” in Hungary. BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s role in connecting with the public, drawing parallels between the April Uprising and contemporary society. He cautioned that national pride must be cultivated responsibly, as history can be manipulated.

Prof. Valchev urged viewing history as an active subject, arguing that Bulgaria is undergoing a complex period akin to 1876. He highlighted the key lessons of the uprising: the desire for self-determination, belief in the nation’s future, and the importance of the younger generation taking responsibility.

Mayor Gagov urged Bulgarians to honor the legacy of the common people who became heroes during the anniversary. Boyko Vassilev pointed to the lasting impact of journalists during the uprising, noting that the event raises enduring questions relevant to modern Bulgarian public life.
