On April Uprising Revive Memory of Freedom Martyrs, Says BTA Director General

Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), stated that recent discussions regarding the April Uprising serve to commemorate the martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom. He made these remarks at the opening conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concludes a series of discussions organized by BTA across several revolutionary districts, including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Ruse.

During the conference, Valchev highlighted key lessons derived from the historical events. He emphasized that successful outcomes require defining major objectives before tackling the necessary, difficult steps. He noted that the narrative of the uprising—which was initially viewed as unsuccessful—ultimately resulted in Bulgaria’s freedom.

Valchev drew a parallel between this historical outcome and salvation, suggesting that media coverage can significantly influence public opinion and aid a nation’s survival, as was the case after the April Uprising. The talks also covered leadership principles, citing excerpts from Zahari Stoyanov’s writings. According to Valchev, effective leaders must remain active, avoid personal gain, and protect their followers from despair.

Furthermore, he stressed the necessity of varied leadership levels chosen based on expertise. Valchev recalled the extensive preparatory efforts, mentioning memorial tributes in Giurgiu and Ruse, and earlier discussions held in Vratsa and Sliven. He announced that these discussions will continue internationally in Bucharest, Belgrade, and Odesa.

Prompted by this historical dialogue, BTA plans to host a dedicated conference on “Media and Leaders”

  1. It is interesting to see how historical commemorations continue to frame national identity today.
