On April Uprising Revive Memory of Freedom Martyrs, Says BTA Director General

Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), Kiril Valchev, stated that recent discussions commemorating the April Uprising serve to recall the sacrifices made for Bulgaria’s freedom. These remarks were made at the opening conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concludes a series of discussions organized by BTA across several revolutionary districts, including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Ruse.

Valchev noted that the discussions yielded key insights regarding the April Uprising, emphasizing the necessity of establishing broad objectives before tackling difficult implementation steps. He highlighted the consensus that the uprising’s perceived failures ultimately contributed to the success of Bulgarian independence. Furthermore, he stressed the significant role of media in shaping public opinion, arguing that media coverage can amplify events to aid a nation’s survival.

Drawing from excerpts of Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, Valchev outlined essential leadership principles, advising that leaders must remain active, avoid personal gain, and shield their followers from despair. He also pointed out the need for diverse levels of leadership, stressing that no leader is above the populace. The commemoration effort has been extensive, beginning with early discussions in Ruseto and involving tributes at memorial sites in Giurgiu and Ruse.
