On April Uprising Revive Memory of Freedom Martyrs, Says BTA Director General

During a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev addressed participants at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) across several revolutionary districts, including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Ruse. Valchev stated that the talks highlighted several key lessons from the April Uprising applicable to the present day.

A central theme of the discussions was the realization that perceived setbacks during the uprising ultimately contributed to Bulgaria’s eventual freedom. He drew a parallel between this historical outcome and the concept of salvation, emphasizing the profound impact media can have in shaping public opinion and supporting a nation. The commemoration involved extensive activities, including memorial services at sites related to the uprising, such as in Giurgiu and Ruse.

Valchev also presented excerpts from Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, advising that effective leadership requires activity, an avoidance of personal gain, and the ability to guide followers away from despair. He noted that successful leadership demands varied expertise and that leaders remain accountable to the people. The commemorative efforts, which began months prior, spanned various locations and milestones.
