BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that discussions surrounding the April Uprising commemorate the struggle for Bulgarian freedom. He made these remarks at the opening of a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) across various centers, including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, Panagyurishte, Ruse, and Giurgiu.
During the conferences, Valchev noted that participants identified several critical lessons from the April Uprising relevant to contemporary issues. A central theme was the concept that historical setbacks can contribute to ultimate success, citing the achievement of Bulgarian freedom. He emphasized the significant role media coverage can play in shaping public opinion and national outcomes, drawing parallels to historical moments of profound change.
Valchev also referenced excerpts from Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, extracting leadership principles. These included the necessity for leaders to remain active, avoid personal gain, and protect their followers from despair. The commemoration efforts spanned several months, beginning with discussions in Ruseto, honoring figures like Hristo Botev, and including tributes at memorials in Vratsa and Sliven.
In Koprivshtitsa, on the anniversary of the first shot of the uprising, BTA presented specialized publications on the topic. Looking ahead, Valchev announced that the BTA will organize a 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media focused on the theme “Media and Leaders.” These commemorative activities underscore the lasting historical significance of the April Uprising.
