Parliament to Feature Six Parliamentary Groups, Floor Leaders Announced

The 52nd National Assembly commenced its session with the announcement of six distinct parliamentary groups, following the designation of their respective leaders by Parliament Chair Mihaela Dotsova during the inaugural sitting on Thursday. The composition of the groups was detailed, naming the leaders and deputy leaders for each faction. These groups include Progressive Bulgaria, headed by Petar Vitanov; GERB-UDF, led by Boyko Borissov; the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, with Delyan Peevski as its leader; Democratic Bulgaria, under Nadejda Iordanova; Continue the Change, led by Nikolay Denkov; and Vazrazhdane, headed by Kostadin Kostadinov.

A significant political development emerged concerning the relationship between Continue the Change and Democratic Bulgaria. Despite having campaigned together during the elections, the two parties announced a decision to operate as separate parliamentary groups. Democratic Bulgaria’s leadership characterized the separation as a “serious political mistake.” In response, Continue the Change issued an invitation for the parties to sign an agreement establishing a joint parliamentary alliance, proposing the slogan “Strong Bulgaria in a Strong Europe.”

The formation of these six distinct groups on the floor signals the current political landscape within the Assembly.

The differing stances and the recent split between two previously allied factions define the immediate political dynamics as the Assembly begins its legislative work.
