On the first sitting of Bulgaria’s 52nd National Assembly, various political groups and mps addressed journalists regarding their expectations for the legislative period, the election of the Assembly Chair, and the forthcoming cabinet structure. Rumen Radev, leader of the Progressive Bulgaria (PB) coalition, stated that the government structure should be finalized by May 15, citing the volume of pending reforms and necessary work. Radev identified the state’s finances as a top priority for his group, alongside the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council.
Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov urged the incoming government to maintain principles, referencing mass protests that previously compelled a cabinet resignation. He suggested that the current administration demonstrated that governance could function with integrity. Other political figures outlined distinct priorities.
Tomislav Donchev of GERB-UDF highlighted cabinet formation and the adoption of the 2026 budget as paramount tasks. Meanwhile, leaders from the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) and other factions addressed the procedural changes within the assembly. In general, mps expressed varying degrees of cooperation.
Galab Donev of PB confirmed that his group would nominate a candidate for the Chair of the Assembly. Atanas Atanassov noted that the opposition’s focus would be on monitoring and pushing for judicial reforms. Despite political fragmentation, the overarching theme among their statements was the urgent need for systemic reform and stable governance within the newly constituted parliament.
