PM Says His Party May Stay in Government If No-Confidence Motion Passes

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a motion of no confidence pass against his administration, the primary course of action for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain within the government, provided it is outside a coalition arrangement with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the PNL could shift to the opposition, seeking alternatives to establish a “pole of modernization” with other political entities. Speaking in an interview with Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that the continuation of reforms is necessary regardless of who ultimately assumes power.

He pointed to budgetary improvements, noting that public revenues had increased by 12% and expenditures had decreased by 3% following the introduction of strict austerity measures ten months prior. Bolojan defended his actions by stating that he implemented necessary fiscal controls because, in his view, the state budget had historically been misused by inefficient administrations. He asserted that he became a target precisely because he resisted compliance and blocked the alleged misuse of public funds.

When questioned about a potential run for the presidency, Bolojan responded that he remains an active proponent for Romania’s interests, though he suggested he could have sought the office when the opportunity presented itself. The no-confidence vote is scheduled for May 5th. It was initiated by the PSD, the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the parliamentary group MIR – Romania First.

This vote follows the withdrawal of support by the PSD, which was previously the largest party in the ruling four-party coalition that established the current government.
