President Calls for Calm after Clashes between Ruling Party Activists and Protesting Students

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has urged for calm following recent instances of disputes in Belgrade and other areas between activists associated with the ruling party and protesting students, which reportedly involved graffiti and stickers. Speaking during a visit to the State Data Centre in Kragujevac, Vučić stated, “I call on everyone to calm down. Let everyone present their programmes, let them express their positions, let them go to the podiums, but not call for killing, not call for violence.” He also questioned the necessity of responding to aggression with force.

Vučić indicated that early parliamentary elections are anticipated within the next two to six months, adding that he would congratulate any political opponents who win on the evening of the vote. He expressed skepticism regarding the current popularity of the student movement compared to the Serbian Progressive Party. The student body has organized anti-government demonstrations, including blockades at over 60 faculties across Serbia during 2024 and 2025.

These protests have centered on demands for anti-corruption measures and early elections, a movement significantly spurred by the death of 16 people following the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024. The protesting students have declared their intention to abstain from the upcoming vote, instead voicing support for a slate of public figures who have not previously held formal political office.
