President: EU Undoubtedly Supports Belgrade University Rector More than Head of State

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the European Union supports the University of Belgrade Rector, Prof. Vladan Dokic, who recently announced his willingness to run for the presidency. Speaking in Paracin on Wednesday, Vucic asserted that any figure advocating for a less independent Serbia, or one overly reliant on external views, would back Dokic or an alternative candidate over him.

He claimed that he is too independent and too deeply connected to Serbian interests to be favored by powerful international entities. Regarding a meeting between Dokic and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, Vucic suggested that Dokic has engaged in numerous high-level discussions, some of which had not been publicized, questioning the necessity of such meetings for a university rector. Vucic strongly criticized those who lobby for an independent Kosovo, including Italian MEP Sandro Gozi.

He dismissed such efforts, accusing individuals like Gozi of being motivated solely by financial gain and serving as paid lobbyists for Kosovo’s independence, a status Serbia has not recognized for eighteen years. Vucic emphasized that while he acknowledges support for Prof. Dokic within the EU, his primary interest lies in the support of the Serbian people.

Dokic’s decision to consider running for president followed a protest in Belgrade in late March, organized by students and lecturers protesting perceived infringements on academic freedom at the University of Belgrade.
