‘s Social Democratic Party, Alliance for the Union of Romanians to Table No-Confidence Vote Against Bolojan Government

The Social Democratic Party (PSD), Romania’s largest parliamentary party, and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have announced their joint intention to table a no-confidence motion against the government headed by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. This development followed the resignation of several PSD ministers from Bolojan’s cabinet on April 23. In a joint statement, the PSD asserted that the ministerial resignations formalized the party’s withdrawal of political backing, arguing that Bolojan consequently lacked the democratic legitimacy to lead the government.

AUR representatives clarified that their cooperation with the PSD is limited solely to the no-confidence proposal, stating that their primary objective is to prompt early elections, citing the current administration’s inability to manage the economy. In response to the political challenge, Bolojan maintained that he would not resign and indicated plans to form a minority government. Separately, amidst the political instability, President Nicusor Dan held discussions with leaders of the ruling coalition during the week of April 20-26.

The President confirmed that discussions excluded anti-Western forces, specifically naming AUR. Furthermore, he expressed readiness for cooperation on significant national projects, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE. These key programs remain central to the consultations hosted by the President for all governing coalition members.
