Saxophonist Patrick Bartley and His Quartet Perform in Sofia on International Jazz Day

American saxophonist and composer Patrick Bartley will perform in Sofia with his quartet to commemorate International Jazz Day. The performance is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, at Hall 3 of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) as part of the Salon des Arts at NDK. The event is co-organized by the Festivals in Bulgaria Association, NDK, Jazz FM Radio, and Sofia’s National Academy of Music.

During the visit, the American quartet will also conduct a workshop for local Bulgarian jazz musicians. For this engagement, Bartley will present original music from his unrecorded project, New Visions. Patrick Bartley, born in 1993, began his musical journey playing the clarinet in third grade before switching to the saxophone in high school.

He made his first professional recording at the age of 17. Throughout his career, Bartley has shared stages with notable musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, and Jon Batiste. His performance history includes venues like Madison Square Garden and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and he has appeared on television programs, including “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Bartley’s musical style is noted for blending the jazz tradition with influences from funk, soul, and Japanese pop culture, creating a dynamic experience for both established jazz patrons and new listeners.

His technical skill was recognized when he was invited twice to the Grammy Recording Academy’s High School Ensemble and reached the final nomination round for “Best Improvised Jazz Solo” in 2014. Furthermore, Bartley composed music for a concert series at the Museum of Modern Art in New York at the invitation of Wynton Marsalis.
