Spasi Sofia Chair Boris Bonev criticized a proposed development report concerning properties in the Mladost district of Sofia, labeling the plan as potentially “scandalous and corrupt.” Bonev stated that the proposal involves constructing a 22-story building with an estimated 60,000 square meters of gross floor area, alleging it represents a major corruption deal being advanced without public scrutiny or benefit. He expressed concern that the high-density structure would significantly alter one of the district’s busiest intersections. Bonev argued that the development runs counter to the expressed will of Mladost residents, who he claimed have historically supported politicians advocating for curbing overdevelopment.
He noted that while municipal councillor and architect Rositsa Nikolova has repeatedly presented arguments advocating for the report’s postponement or rejection, such professional reasoning is often overshadowed by political consensus. Nikolova pointed out that the Sofia Municipality reportedly owns 92% of the property, while the private owner holds only 8%, suggesting that the municipality should logically dictate development standards. Bonev also criticized certain political groups for their perceived support of the plan and criticized Mayor Vassil Terziev for not taking a public stance.
He added that the submitted report closely mirrors a proposal from a previous term, which was withdrawn despite a majority in the council following public outcry. Bonev concluded by commenting on the current governance climate, suggesting it allows for unchecked actions.
