Sofia Leader Slams Mladost Property Deal as Corrupt

Boris Bonev, Chair of Spasi Sofia, stated to journalists that a proposed development report for properties in Sofia’s Mladost district raises concerns regarding potential corruption. The report envisages the construction of a 22-story building, which would encompass nearly 60,000 square meters of gross floor area. Bonev characterized the matter as a significant and potentially corrupt decision being advanced despite opposition from the public interest.

He expressed concern that the proposal would permit such a large structure at a busy intersection within the district. Bonev noted that local residents have historically favored politicians who advocate for curbing overdevelopment. Adding to the discussion, Spasi Sofia municipal councillor and architect Rositsa Nikolova highlighted ownership details, pointing out that the Sofia Municipality reportedly owns 92% of the property, while the private owner holds only 8%.

She argued that this significant municipal stake implies the local government should dictate the conditions for future development. Bonev also criticized the political climate surrounding the issue, specifically mentioning the perceived failure of Mayor Vassil Terziev to take a public stance. He further noted that the current report closely mirrors a proposal from a previous political term that was withdrawn following public outcry.

The debate centers on the balance between development and municipal control in Mladost. While some view the proposal as a necessary economic development, critics, including Bonev, maintain that the process lacks transparency, raising questions about governance within the city of Sofia.
