Following statements from Interior Ministry’s acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who reported facing pressure to resign, Continue the Change (CC) leader Assen Vassilev issued a strong public reaction via Facebook. Vassilev asserted that in Bulgaria, individuals appear to face immediate attempts at discrediting when someone begins doing their professional duties. He labeled the threats directed at Secretary General Kandev as “absolutely scandalous.”
Vassilev further stated that the only path toward a prosperous, just, and European Bulgaria involves the immediate replacement of the Supreme Judicial Council and the purging of the judicial system of perceived inefficiencies.
His commentary was accompanied by a photo of Kandev, captioned with the declaration, “I won’t go home.”
The tension escalated earlier on Friday when Kandev posted a video message on Facebook. In the video, he stated that he had received a directive to “go home,” but affirmed that he would not yield to threats or “backroom deals.” Kandev had previously been informed that testimony presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office on Thursday included allegations from individuals, including one nicknamed “Kartofa” (The Potato), which he characterized as false. The exchange highlights ongoing political friction regarding the administration of justice and governmental appointments.
